On a Wing and a Hair
Ah,...Nostaglia, isn't it grand? Remembering when is not only manifest in our conversations, memories and walls of old photos, it appears in the strangest places, like right on top of our heads! We're not talking about vintage hats here folks, but the very hairs numbered on our very heads. Yes, we cite the haunting hairdo's of the past. You know, the ones that recycle every fifteen years or more. Specifically, the good old days when women had the hair of angels, Charlie's Angels that is!
You don't have to look far to find the Farrah Fawcett do’s these days. Imitators adorn the fashion pages and runways, the streets, clubs, schools and malls. (Has there ever been a head of hair that has actually pulled off the do as well as she did? If so, we'd like to see it!)
I admit to being a fan and a follower. When the original Charlie's Angels series was on and in it's heyday (yes, I date myself), Farrah’s was the hairdo of my dreams. My attempts to emulate it were ersatz impressions at best. The body of Farrah's locks was lacking in mine, and I possessed a strawberry blonde color, rather than the blessing of her silken ashen shade. It worked nonetheless to a fair degree, on a ‘wing and a hair’! Heavenly Hair Bliss was almost mine!
It's hard for me to comprehend that the “wings” we tried so hard to rid ourselves of in the 80's, and were so mortified of seeing in our 70's pictures are back in style. I have had to adjust my vision to accepting them again and seeing their merit! (But Farrah’s always looks fresh). However, it is rather fun in a way to have the ‘do back in fashion, that which I was so comfortable with as a teenager.
Even if you don't get the full-blown look of Angel hair, if you incorporate wispy wings framing the face, no matter what length, the hair is a nod in the 70's direction. Grow out the bangs a little, part your hair down the middle, get out the curling iron, and you're off! You maybe able to imitate a Jaclyn Smith-esque style with a little more ease than The Farrah. Jaclyn had a subtler, less big and bouncy do than Farrah, that more hair types would adjust to. Both styles, simply Angelic!
Whether or not you're throwing karate kicks in the air as Angels do these days (as in Charlie’s Angels 2000), you'll look as up to date as any heavenly being with your winged locks. Now, or sigh...back then.
